Case 3 Male, 33 years. Punch biopsy, pigmented lesion of chest. Red papule, pigmented, size not stated. No further informationShow diagnosis & comments
MELTUMP (melanocytic tumour of uncertain malignant potential). Insufficient evidence to diagnose, or rule out, melanoma. The lesion is probably benign, but there is insufficient certainty that the biopsy findings are representative of the lesion as a whole.
MELTUMP is not a diagnosis, it is a description of a situation: the pathologist is unable to diagnose, or rule out, melanoma. This can be due to difficulties arising from the histological features of the lesion, but it can also arise because of poor biopsy quality, often in combination with poor clinical information. The latter causes of MELTUMP should of course be eliminated as much as possible.
